SANCTUARY

This project was a senior project for Integrated Digital Media NYU degree. The focus of this project was to make a socially conscious game with tight and responsive movement. While this is very broad we want to leave our options open so we could make a more relaxed and just straight fun game!

We initially started with a rapid prototyping model where we would develop a prototype taking an approach to the creative challenge, analyze it, and see if we wanted to continue on or try a new idea. These following images are of each prototype we explored before continuing on to full production.

Process

Prototype 1

Objective:

Utilize Light teleportation to progress through the level.

Features:

  • Light source casts a shadow

  • Shadow can be teleported too if the surface allows

What did it teach us?

  • Interesting use of Light In a 2d Game

  • Trying to make dynamic lighting for teleportation mechanic is harder than initially anticipated

Prototype 2

Objective:

Utilize light to reveal hidden platforms and continue forward

Features:

  • A light source reveals objects

  • Objects can be only used when Light is shining on it

What did it teach us?

  • Revealing Light was fun and intrigued players

  • but movement felt jittery and not very fluid

Prototype 3

Objective:

To Find your friend

Features:

  • Light (fish) can be thrown in 4 cardinal directions

  • When the light enters a dark space it will  reveal what is inside

What did it teach us?

  • Interesting use of Light In a 2d Game

  • Trying to make dynamic lighting for teleportation mechanic is harder than initially anticipated

With time running out, we decided to continue to work on prototype 3.  It was simple enough to make multiple levels but intriguing enough to build a more complicated movement system around it!

Final Build

What to work on for the future

Story & narrative elements

  • More implementation of story elements that promote an intended emotional path. While this prototype does not have many story elements the intention for the future is to link in ideas of mental health that can help people relate to different emotions me and my project mates have experienced.

Immersive soundtrack

More levels that utilize our unique mechanics

More sprites
